Depleted Uranium (DU)
The movement to ban Uranium Weapons is a subterfuge. Depleted Uranium weapons are already illegal under all treaties, agreements, the Geneva and Hague Conventions, and International Law. DU weapons violate the Laws of War: 1868 Declaration of St. Petersburg, the 1899 St. Martens clause and the laws of armed conflict, and US military law. DU weapons meet the US Government definition of weapons of mass destruction and violate US law. DU weapons were illegal when first proposed under the Manhattan Project in 1943 - to be used on the battlefield as a poisonous and radioactive gas.
A "ban" in legal terms implies that DU weapons are still legal and that people would like them to stop being used. It prevents - under law - that those who have been exposed, contaminated, or suffered from the use of these weapons, from being entitled to collect any compensation. And implies that, only after the ban, will affected parties be legally entitled to compensation.
It means that the US has staged 4 illegal nuclear wars since 1991 with the use of illegal DU weapons - and can get away without any accountability - of permanently poisoning regions from the Middle East and Central Asia, and the radioactive dust will travel around the world completely mixing in the global atmosphere exposing all life on earth where the DU is deposited in the environment.
Because DU already meets the definition of a "poison" weapon under international law, it immediately identifies it as an illegal weapon. It has not been specifically declared a radioactive illegal weapon, but that is not necessary to determine that it is already illegal.
The purpose for the development of a movement to ban DU weapons is driven by the Pentagon in order to undermine the international efforts of activists, whistleblowers, and radiation specialists who have been working hard to educate the public and get an international MORATORIUM on DU weapons - just as one was finally declared on landmines.
The driving forces behind this disinformation campaign have been the Military Toxics Project, National Gulf War Resource Center, members of LAKA, and some individuals such as Dan Fahey of National Gulf War Resource Center, Tara Thornton at Military Toxics Project, Henk Van Der Keur at LAKA in the Netherlands, Charles Sheehan-Miles who is Exec. Direct. of Helen Caldicotts new org, and Damacio Lopez.
I am certain that people sincerely dedicated to the abolishment of DU weapons and who have been working on this issue do not want the US government to get away with devastating the global environment and population with at least ten times as much radiation as was released during atmospheric testing. The effects of DU are permanent and will affect future generations for those who are contaminated.
PLEASE WORK TOWARDS A MORATORIUM ON DU WEAPONS.
