HUNTINGTON BEACH ? An explosion at an Orange County sewage treatment facility injured five people this morning, one critically, a fire dispatch supervisor said.

The blast was reported at 7:19 a.m. at Orange County Sanitation District Treatment Plant No. 2 on Brookhurst Street, just north of Pacific Coast Highway, Metro-Net fire dispatchers said.

A helicopter ambulance was airborne with the critically injured patient about 30 minutes after the explosion occurred.

All five victims were reported to have suffered burns. In addition to the victim in critical condition, two suffered moderate injuries and two suffered minor injuries, officials said. They were taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, UCI Medical Center and Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian.

The cause of the explosion wasn't known, although electrical officials were summoned to the site. There were no immediate reports of sewage leaks. The sanitation district processes sewage that's routed from throughout Orange County through a 650-mile waste-water collection system. Treatment Plant No. 2 handles excess sewage from the main plant in Fountain Valley, according to the district's web site.
