Dear Surfrider enthusiasts,

The following petition is time sensitive. Please forward it to anyone who will support our cause.

Best regards,

Lia Shipman
Volunteer Coordinator, Malibu Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Surfrider Foundation, Malibu Chapter has a unique opportunity to help improve the water quality at Malibu’s Surfrider Beach, and we need your help! The California Coastal Commission (CCC) will hold a hearing in November on an issue involving an unpermitted, private golf course located adjacent to Malibu Lagoon. Surfrider Foundation will submit a letter and testify at the November CCC hearing against the permitting of this golf course, but we need your support!

We are up against one of the wealthiest people in California, who built a 10-acre golf course for his private use right next to the Malibu Lagoon and Surfrider Beach WITHOUT a proper permit from the CCC. As it was hidden behind an 8’ wall, we did not realize it was there until recently. You may have read about this issue in the LA Times or seen TV news segments on it. The course has used over 800 lbs. of strong fertilizers and herbicides each year, and these pollutants have been flowing untreated into Malibu Lagoon and eventually out to the world famous Surfrider break where tens of thousands of people surf annually. We strongly believe we have the law and common sense on our side, but we need your help ("people power") to balance the army of attorneys and unlimited financial resources of this polluter. Please help us by signing the on-line petition linked below.

We are collecting petition signatures throughout the month of October. While we will be sending our letter to the CCC to help sway the staff report opinion in our favor this coming Wednesday, October 1, we will also submit additional signatures at the actual CCC meeting in early November when we speak on the issue in front of the Commission. We already have 1,000 signatures on paper and hope to spread the word about our new online petition. Thank you for supporting our efforts to help improve the water quality at Surfrider.
