Subject: The tide is turning! Call your senator today
Date: Fri, 08 Apr 2005 11:07:28 -0700

On Wednesday our coalition delivered 1 million signatures opposing the Republican bid to stack the courts. Today we're aiming for 25,000 calls directly to senators. Can you help us get there?

Dear MoveOn Member,
In the last few weeks a surge of grassroots action has helped turn the tide in our fight against the Republican bid for absolute power to appoint far-right, corporate leaning judges. Last month, MoveOn members blanketed the nation with 19,000 letters to the editors of nearly every sizable newspaper in America.[1] This week, we joined our allies on the steps of the Supreme Court to present Senate leaders with signatures from over 1 million Americans opposing the "nuclear option."

Each time you act, Democrats find more courage, and moderate Republicans get more nervous about their radical leadership's plan to eliminate the filibuster—we've got to keep the pressure on.

It's time for our senators to hear from us directly. That's why we've set the ambitious goal of generating 25,000 phone calls today opposing the "nuclear option" to break the rules and ram through extreme judges. If you make a call today, your voice will combine with thousands of others to have a huge impact. Please call right now:

Senator Dianne Feinstein
DC Phone: 202-224-3841

Senator Barbara Boxer
DC Phone: 202-224-3553

Then tell us you've called and track our progress towards 25,000, by clicking here:

You don't need to be an expert to call. You can just give a short statement to whomever answers (or the voicemail), such as: "Hello. I live in California, and I would like to urge Senator Feinstein [or Senator Boxer] to oppose the 'nuclear option' to eliminate the right to filibuster judicial nominations. I believe in fair judges, and checks and balances. Thank you very much." It's easy, quick, and really, really important.

After you report your call through the link above, please forward this e-mail on to friends and family—an important way to spread the word and help us hit 25,000 calls.

Some other MoveOn members (on our Operation Democracy local organizing teams) made similar calls on this issue a couple weeks ago. Daryl, in Lynbrook, New York, got 24 friends to call. She told us:

"We haven't limited ourselves to people in our state—we've asked friends out of town to call too. We sent out the email, but with our family, friends, and people we work with we're personally asking them to call. Most people are doing it when we ask them, and we make it easy."

In the last 2 weeks we have seen some powerful examples of why Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid calls this "the most important issue I've ever dealt with."

In the tragic case of Terri Schiavo we saw congressional Republicans in a hysterical rush to override the courts and score political points. House Republican leader Tom DeLay threatened retribution against the judges who upheld the law. And Republican Senator John Cornyn suggested that violence against judges—like the recent murder in Atlanta—might be understandable as frustration provoked by the judges' "political decisions."

Why all this rage? Because radical Republicans are waging an all out war to impose their extreme views on the rest of us—and our free, fair courts are standing in their way.

Their "nuclear option" is a parliamentary maneuver to eliminate the centuries-old right to filibuster (carry on extended debate), placing absolute power to stack the courts in the hands of one party for the first time in history. They could launch the "nuclear option" at any time, but we can defeat it with at least 51 votes from broad-minded senators from both parties.

Democrats and Republicans both know that the vast majority of Americans oppose eliminating the filibuster.[2] Now we just need to continue showing them that Americans are engaged in this debate, and that we will hold them accountable for their decision.

If we can generate 25,000 calls today, that message will get through loud and clear.

Please take a minute and call right now:

Senator Dianne Feinstein
DC Phone: 202-224-3841

Senator Barbara Boxer
DC Phone: 202-224-3553

Thanks for all that you do,
